About Kharkov
Kharkov was created in 1654 as a fortress to defend its land from Tatars.
At the end of 18 century the first university of Ukraine and the third of Russian Empire was founded. To the end of 19 century Kharkov becomes an intellectual, trade and industry center of Ukraine and at the same time it becomes revolutionary center. In 1888 terrorists were trying to kill Russian tsar Alexander III next to Kharkov. And in 1900 the first labor demonstration took place in Kharkov on May, 1. Future leader of Russian revolution Lenin dedicated his monograph to this event” Days of May in Kharkov”
Kharkov suffered a lot during revolution and civil war of 1917-1922. Thousands of citizens were killed by bolshevists. After ending of revolution Kharkov was pronounced as the first capital of the Ukrainian Soviet Republic. The best and the most prosperous period of life began in this city. There lived and worked a lot of famous Ukrainian writers: Oles Gonchar, Ostap Vishnya, poets Volodimir Sosura and Pavlo Tichina. A lot of famous theatre and cinema directors. At the same time there was built the biggest building of Kharkov- Gosprom and one of the biggest squares in Europe- Square of Independence (that’s how it is called now, former Dzerzhinsky Square).
In 1931 the atom of lithium was split in Kharkov first time in the world. This gave a start to atom epoch in the human history.
Then in 1933 a lot of people in Ukraine and Kharkov died because of hunger. The reason was high demands of government to people. Communist party moved the capital of Ukraine to Kiev. Stalin came to power and killed a lot of Soviet people among them there were a lot of Karkov citizens. The catastrophe for the city came with the World War II. The number of people reduced. Only on August, 23 in 1943 Kharkov became free of fascists. Tens of architectural monuments were destroyed and a lot of masterpieces were taken abroad.
Now Kharkov is one of the most beautiful cities of Ukraine. The most interesting peculiarity of this city is a mixture of architectural styles: noblemen residences, constructions of 1920-es and Stalin neoclassical buildings. Everyone can find something for himself. The oldest building is Pokrovskiy Cathedral of 1689. Kharkov has a lot of other old beautiful churches and cathedrals, famous Catholic Church and big Synagogue. There are many theatres and museums, restaurants and night-clubs and cozy cafes in the city.
Kharkov is also famous as educational center of Ukraine. It has more then 20 universities, academies and institutes.
Kharkov has skeptical attitude to Kiev maybe because it is not as spoiled as a former capital of Ukraine. Kharkov people love and proud of their city and consider Kharkov girls to be the most beautiful in the world.
